A MAN has appeared in court following the death of a former Nelson man in Portsmouth.
Father-of-six Russell Ward, of Cressy Road, Buckland, still has relatives in the Pendle area.
James McCann, 34, of Cressy Road, Buckland, appeared before Portsmouth Magistrates' Court on Monday charged with manslaughter and grievous bodily harm.
Mr Ward, who has children aged six and eight in Portsmouth, was found at his home last Wednesday.
A 30-year-old woman who was arrested shortly after the body was discovered has been released on police bail pending further inquiries.
Mr Ward was born in the Isle of Man where his parents still live and in 1990 he joined the Royal Navy as a chef and moved to Portsmouth. On leaving the Navy he worked for the Post Office in Portsmouth.
A post mortem examination has been carried out and the Home Office pathologist is still awaiting test results.
