AN apprentice is £1,000 richer after weaving his way to a prestigious award.
Simon Pickering, 23, an apprentice overlooker with Herbert Parkinson Weaving Mill, Westwell Street, Darwen, was given the cash prize after being named young weaver of the year at a ceremony in London.
The award is for people aged under 25 and aims to encourage those who have ability in weaving and make a significant contribution to their company. It is organised by the Worshipful Company of Weavers, which has been in existence since 1130 and is dedicated to ensuring high standards in the profession.
Simon impressed the judges with his knowledge of weaving and his experience, given that he has only been in the profession for five years.
Ian McCormick, Herbert Parkinson's weaving production manager, said: "Simon is a highly motivated, skilled and competent weaving specialist with real ambition and genuine management potential."
