A COUNCIL investigation will be held over the alleged treatment of a pregnant mum after she reported she had tripped on block paving in Albion Street, Leigh.

Mother-of-two Tracy Young was walking along the passageway between the new outdoor market stalls and the former Co-op building when she tripped, cut her knees, ruined her trousers and damaged a shoe heel.

She claims she took advice from stallholders and reported the accident at the market office.

She said: "My husband, Noel, and I quite frankly weren't greeted with much sympathy or help.

"I am seven months pregnant and was experiencing discomfort in my stomach which was frightening.

"After much discussion an official agreed to make a note in the accident book. There was no apology or offer to get the paving, which isn't exactly saftisfactory, examined."

Tracy, who suffers from pelvic dysfunction, claims she now finds walking any distance a problem, suffers leg pain and fears being taken into hospital for bedrest, a prospect her two other children would not relish.

Market trader, Maureen Maloney, who saw Mrs Young fall said: 'It happens nearly every day. A couple of weeks ago an old lady fell and broke her teeth."

A council spokeperson said: "We would not accept anyone who had an accident getting this sort of response. We treat all accidents on council property very seriously.

"There will be an investigation into the allegations and we will contact Mrs Young to ascertain more details.

"With regards to the block paving someone will be sent to examine it with a view to making repairs if necessary.

"If the lady was spoken to in the way she claims we are very sorry."
