MICHAEL HUNT'S Portuguese Amateur Open ended in disappointment yesterday when the second round was abandoned due to rain.
The Burnley golfer had scored a three-over-par 75 on the first day and was confident of carding at least a level par 72 on the second, which he felt would take him through to today's matchplay stage.
The 23-year-old ELGA champion was level par after nine holes in the second round but, after driving rain soaked the course, officials suspended the event and eventually abandoned the second round.
"Everyone had played 27 holes so there was a rumour they would go off 27 holes but it wouldn't have been the same 27 holes because some people started down the back nine," he said.
"I had been two under but I hit a couple of bogeys and paid a few visits to the water.
"But it didn't matter because they went off the first round scores and I missed the cut by one shot."
Hunt was due to caddy for England player Richie Walker on the first day of the matchplay stage of the competition.
And he will play in the consolation 18-hole competition tomorrow before flying back to England in time for the Sunningdale Foursomes which starts on Monday.
He will partner Northern Order of Merit champion Ken Hudson in the competition.
"It's been raining here all week so if it rains next week I'll be alright!"
