MORE police are on their way to the borough but it's simply not enough, say the borough's MPs.

David Chaytor and Ivan Lewis are demanding a more radical change to the way in which police resources are divided up across Greater Manchester.

They met with David Wilmot, chief constable of Greater Manchester Police, and Councillor Stephen Murphy, the chairman of the police authority.

The MPs were told that a new formula was being introduced later this year. As a result, Bury is to receive 36 more police officers over the next four years.

But the MPs say they remain dissatisfied with Bury's overall allocation, and have asked for further discussions with GMP.

Mr Chaytor, who represents Bury North, said: "While I welcome the extra officers scheduled to come to Bury, I will continue to press GMP for further changes to their allocations formula.

"At the meeting, the chief constable stated that he wishes to see an even workload for all police officers across Greater Manchester.

"I believe that, to make this sentiment a reality, he needs to allocate more officers to Bury."

And his Bury South counterpart Ivan Lewis added: "Despite the minor changes to the formula, I believe that Bury remains the most overworked area in Greater Manchester Police."
