RESIDENTS have a chance to "go green" at a cut price rate for one day only.
Locals are being offered cut price home composters and water butts in a bid to help save the environment.
The sale will take place on Sunday, March 24 in the car park of Asda at Pilsworth from 10am to 3pm.
The event has been organised by Bury Council in partnership with United Utilities.
Shoppers have a choice of two composting bins. The Compost Converter, with a 220-litre capacity, will cost £12 (usually £39.95), while the 330-litre capacity model will sell for £15 instead of £49.95. Water butts will cost £15, down from £29.95.
Councillor Julie Higson, executive member for the environment, said that landfill sites in which to bury waste were reaching capacity.
"While many of us already recycle glass, paper, cans and textiles, composting organic waste is seldom seen as an equally important way of recycling," she said.
"However, 30 per cent of all waste that we throw away is made up of either kitchen vegetable scraps or garden waste. That equates to a quarter of a tonne per household per annum, which could easily be composted."
Coun Higson added: "Many people do not realise that a sprinkler hose uses more water in one hour than a family of four uses in a day.
"In one year, roughly 90,000 litres of water falls on each roof and goes straight down the drain. That amounts to 473 full water butts -- rainwater that could be re-used to water the garden. By purchasing a water butt you will be helping to save this vital resource as well as helping the environment."
Stocks for the one-day sale are limited, but residents can book their orders in advance by calling 0870 844 3011.
People can also order a composter to be delivered, although this costs £5 per item.
