THE eyes of the sporting world will be on the north west in summer when the Commonwealth Games comes to Manchester, and it will an extra special event for one young Preston sports star.
Hockey player David Sullivan, has been given the honour of carrying the Commonwealth Games baton which is being passed around the country before making it's way to the opening ceremony in July.
Seventeen-year-old David has been chosen one of those privileged to carry the futuristically designed baton as it makes its way to the brand new Commonwealth Stadium in Manchester.
David, who is currently studying at Newman College, will carry it 500 yards before passing it on.
He was nominated for the task by Lancashire Under-17 hockey team coach Dave Carter who was impressed with the way he skippered the side to victory last season in the northern counties championship.
David also plays at centre-half for Preston Hockey Club, with players much older to him, and helped them win promotion from their division this season (see page 31 for full report).
He said: "It's a great honour to be chosen to do this and I'm really looking forward to it.
"I'm hoping to watch some of the hockey matches at the Games.
"It will be a superb sporting occasion, one of the biggest in the world and to be playing just a small part in it is absolutely fantastic."
David has played for North West juniors team in trials and his ambition is to play for the Great Britain side.
So who knows - come the next Commonwealth Games he may have an event more important part play in the event.
