BURY Amateur Boxing Club's Amir Khan made light work of securing his second National Schoolboys Boxing title when he took to the ring in Barnsley.

Khan needed just 90 seconds of his Under 15s bout to stop the Lawrence club boxer, Steven Turner.

Khan has been courted by England selectors for some time and is now a regular on the international circuit, but the comprehensive manner of his latest victory will have enhanced his reputation even further.

He struggled to beat the longer reach of his six-foot tall opponent early on, but used his evasive footwork to unleash a string of damaging body punches before delivering the knockout blow straight through the middle.

Coach Mike Jelly said Amir could have to rely on championship and international bouts to further his career as his impressive power has the nation's top club fighters running scared.

"He did very well considering it was a decent lad he was up against," he said.

"He had also reached the National Boys Club finals so he was no mug, but Amir is a special kid, who is dedicated and has a lot of natural ability. He got him in the corner and hit him with five or six shots and then caught him on the chin with a great shot.

"I don't think he will get any more club fights now. No-one will take him on because they all know of his reputation. Even all the other trainers can see the potential in him."

Khan's next bout is likely to be at his Bury Amateur Boxing club base as a select team from Ireland arrive this May.
