JIM Murray objects to more pedestrianisation of Bury town centre (Your Letters, March 5) but he must be aware that this has been proceeding apace in cities and towns across the country for years. Why should Bury be an exception?

Most people appreciate a pleasant pedestrianised town centre and surely only the Jeremy Clarksons of this world could possibly object.

Mr Murray doesn't think that pedestrianisation of the town centre increases pedestrian safety, but how can this not be so? No cars on the streets means that you can't be hit or run over by one!

I wonder if it has ever occurred to Mr Murray that pedestrianisation means that people, including motorists, will not be inhaling noxious exhaust fumes as they go about their various pursuits.

One answer to Mr Murray's problem might be to park free at Radcliffe or Whitefield Metrolink stations and travel into Bury by tram. But I should mention that there is a walk of about 100 yards from the car park to the platform.

Alternatively, perhaps the metropolitan borough could introduce a rickshaw service into Bury town centre and then Mr Murray and other motorists who have such a tremendous problem with walking a few yards could jump straight from their car into a rickshaw and be ferried to their various appointments.
