ACTIVITIES to mark the 17th Commonwealth Games across Blackburn and Darwen were launched at a Curling taster session.

Curling, hitherto a minority sport, has shot to prominence following the British women's team Gold Medal triumph at the recent Winter Olympics.

Blackburn with Darwen Council joined forces with the Spirit of Friendship Festival, a celebration linked to the games to give youngsters a taste of different activities.

As part of the Commonwealth celebrations a packed programme of events including a swim challenge, a trampolining summer camp and friendship street party have been organised.

Coun Kate Hollern, Executive Member for Leisure and Culture, said: "I am delighted to be part of the Spirit of Friendship Festival celebrations.

"We have a packed programme of events taking place across or borough with something for everyone.

"Some of the activities are linked to the Queen's Golden Jubilee with communities coming together for a summer of celebration and I feel sure that it will be a time to remember for all our residents."

Coun Hollern was at the launch of the festivities, held at Shadsworth Leisure Centre, Shadsworth Road, Blackburn.
