GIVING the Labour budget proposals at the meeting of Blackburn with Darwen Council, Councillor Gail Barton boasted that the rise in council tax of just 4.5 per cent is one of the lowest in the country.
Of course, as my colleague Councillor Jim Hirst pointed out, of the country's 46 unitary authorities our council tax is the fifth highest.
The question is: are we getting value for the money we pay?
To take just one issue, our roads are among the worst in East Lancashire by common consent. Yet the ruling Labour group does not have a strategy to address this.
Listening to Coun Barton, one would have thought that Blackburn with Darwen Council was providing modern, up-to-date services and giving superb value for money.
The truth is, the Labour Party have been running this borough for far too long and have become arrogant and complacent.
