MOUNTED police officers and horses have been kitted out with new protective gear following last summer's Burnley riots.

The new kit has been introduced after a review of the protection given to officers and staff involved in serious disturbances.

The review was led by Inspector Ian Pilling based at Lancashire Police HQ in Hutton, near Preston, along with staff from the constabulary's Defensive Tactics and Community Safety teams.

More than 200 police officers from across the county were involved in policing the riots which rocked Burnley at the end of June last year.

Inspector Pilling said: "We must remember that the policing operation was an overall success but not rule out the opportunity for improvements in officer safety.

"We have already made significant progress."

Details of the new gear will be revealed in the next few months.
