PAUL Gascoigne watched his new team-mates beat Preston North End to climb to fourth in the first division and immediately promised to help the Clarets into the Premier League.

"The way the lads played tonight, we will get there," he claimed.

"I hope that I will play on Wednesday night, but it is up to the manager if he wants to change a winning team."

Gazza was given a roof raising reception by the Turf Moor fans before kick-off last night and there was little doubt that his arrival played a big part in the 2-1 victory.

The atmosphere is sure to be just as electric when Bradford City visit on Wednesday night and Gascoigne hopes that it will be a debut that is followed by a longer stay at the club.

"I have got plenty to offer and this is a new challenge I am really looking forward to," he said. "Wednesday night can't come quickly enough for me.

"I am here until the end of the season and if I do well I will definitely speak to the manager at the end of the season.

"I am very pleased with the win but I am not surprised. When I was looking in the dressing room and when they scored and everyone leapt off the bench, you could see the spirit is fantastic. I can't wait to get down to training."

But it was not just his new team-mates who impressed the former England star, it was the supporters who roared his name.

"The fans here are fantastic, they deserve to be in the Premier League," he said.

Gazza has made no secret of the fact that his desire to play first team football was behind his move away from Everton and he is confident he is fit and ready for the fray.

"Last couple of days I have been here and trained with the lads and I feel fit," he said. "I had a full game at Middlesbrough last week and I think I have plenty to offer.

"I have two ambitions for this season. First I want to get Burnley into the Premier League, secondly I want Everton to stay up."

Stan Ternent, the man who brought the player to Turf Moor, was certainly in ebullient mood after the game. It was a first home win in over three months and the first time they had recorded back to back victories since a run of seven wins before Christmas.

"We have done the double over Preston and we are making progress," he said. "I enjoy winning any game but it was nice to beat Preston because they have done well and are a very good side.

"If we get into the play-offs that gives us a second opportunity to get into the Premiership. I have been in the play-offs before, once we won and the other time we lost."

He was delighted with the combination of new signing David Johnson and Ian Moore in attack who both scored in the first half and he said: "They were very quick and lively and we knew they could cause them problems.

"Gareth Taylor is still suspended for Wednesday night but when he is available he will give me a nice problem to have."

With Glen Little and Robbie Blake starting on the bench, Steve Davis ruled out with a calf injury and Arthur Gnohere eager to win his place back, Ternent is starting to have tough decisions to make all over the pitch.

As far as he is concerned it is perfect timing as the promotion battle hots up.

It was a great weekend for Burnley as their rivals lost ground, they won at home and they landed Gazza. Now everyone is fired up for facing Bradford.
