CHILDREN in Lancashire are once again being taught the 'three Rs' in schools across the county.
However, this time the theme of the lessons is Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
Lancashire County Council is keen to teach children about an alternative 3Rs as part of its strategy to turn Lancashire's waste mountain into a molehill.
As part of this effort every primary school child in Lancashire will receive a bookmark, promoting the idea that everyone has a part to play in rethinking what is done with rubbish.
The bookmarks will be given out to tie in with World Book Day and ask the children to think about how they could take action themselves.
Every day each household in Lancashire throws away around 2.5 kilos of rubbish, or around a tonne every year, More than 60 per cent could be recycled.
A county council spokesman said: "The problem is one that we all face every day and we therefore need to start meeting the challenges of what to do with our rubbish now."
County Councillor Brian Johnson said: "We all have to think about what we can do to help reduce the mountain of rubbish that we throw away everyday in Lancashire, and by giving these bookmarks to all of the County's primary school children we hope to get them thinking about the issue.
"Most children can put a lot of adults to shame when it comes to recycling - now is the time we can all learn from them." For more information, visit the website at www.lancswasteinfo.com or ring the information line on 0845 0500 957.
