POLICE are still hunting a hit and run driver who killed a Bury pensioner.
William Armstead was struck by a Toyota Corolla GTi outside Fairfield General Hospital at 8.40am on Thursday (March 14).
The 73-year-old died hours later despite surgery.
The Toyota, which had not been stolen, was being driven by a young Asian man. It was found abandoned in Gladstone Street with a smashed windscreen. Witnesses said Mr Armstead, of Foxglove Drove, Bury, was thrown into the air as he was struck while crossing Rochdale Old Road, near to Castle Hill Road.
Mr Armstead's wife Evelyn was visiting friends in Devon at the time and was told of the tragedy by police.
She was being comforted by relatives.
