COUNCILLORS went on a litter pick of Preston this week claiming the new city is 'dirty' and in danger of becoming a dump.

Rubbish overflowing in bins and blowing all over streets and parks needs to be sorted out, if Preston is to attract visitors, according to Sherwood councillors who donned rubber gloves on Tuesday to tidy up the mess.

And, they say, the number of dumped fridges and freezers is rising too.

Now they are calling on the public to clean-up their mess and to recycle waste, and on the council to change the refuse collection system to get rubbish removed faster. Sherwood waste collection alternates with black bins containing household waste collected one week and brown bins containing bio-degradable waste removed the next.

"The rubbish isn't collected enough, the bins are overflowing and it blows everywhere ," said Coun Milne.

Adrian Phillips, assistant director of works at Preston City Council, said: "The 'twin bin' scheme was introduced a year ago after public consultation. It has been considered successful by the council and other authorities who plan to implement similar schemes.

"We provide a free collection service for fridges, but are limited to the number we can collect."
