BUGGIES lined up on the starting grid as pupils from Bury and Radcliffe pitted their engineering skills against each other in a mini grand prix.
The pocket rockets raced across the floor at Bury's Mill Gate Centre as the highlight of a drive to make science and technology more exciting for youngsters.
Youngsters built the vehicles, powered by a tiny electric motor, with kits provided by the Bolton and Bury Education Business Partnership.
The Radcliffe contingent came from St Andrew's CE Primary and St John's CE Primary, with teams from St Pauls's CE Primary and St John's CE Primary in Bury also taking part.
The race, which coincided with science week, was sponsored by Toyota dealer RRG Bury.
Kits were customised and decorated colourfully, with a winner from each school qualifying to take part in the final. Winning by a streak in the main event were St Andrew's.
Ray Heaton, science, design and technology consultant and the partnership said: "This teaches children about building electric circuits and putting bodies onto the cars.
"It links in with science and technology they are doing at school.
"They have been very enthusiastic about it."
