STAFF and pupils at two Burnley high schools were celebrating today after being receiving more than £50,000 of extra cash in a government reward scheme.
Ivy Bank High and Towneley High are among about 170 in Lancashire and 7,000 nationwide to be highlighted for their achievements by schools standards minister Stephen Timms.
Each will receive extra cash to further boost their performance as part of a School Achievement Award.
The move comes after Mr Timms promised cash bonuses for schools which achieve higher or improved standards in test results.
Mr Timms said: "The two Burnley schools have been given the money because of their rapid improvement.
"Towneley faces many challenges, but under the leadership of the headteacher the school is a place where pupils are keen on success and it shows in their improved results.
"Ivy Bank has been praised as an outstanding comprehensive and is held in high regard by parents.
"The leadership of head teacher Mr Ball has proved inspiring for staff and pupils, and the school's results reflect its commitment to success."
Money will go to schools:
Where pupil performance in 2001 was substantially better than in 1998
Where pupil performance in 2001 was better than most schools in similar circumstances
That have come out of special measures in the 2000/01 school year
Mr Timms added: "Success in schools is achieved through a combination of good leadership, good teaching and team work by all staff.
"The school achievement awards celebrate the achievements of the entire school community including, teachers, teaching assistants, administrative staff and catering teams.
"We know we have asked a lot of our schools over the past four years and I am delighted that these awards give us the opportunity to thank schools for all thy do and recognise those who are driving forward our aim to raise standards for all."
Deputy head teacher of Towneley David Franklin said: "We have been awarded £19,600 which has come at a great time for us.
"We weren't aware until today that we were to get the money because we didn't apply for it. It has come as a welcome Easter surprise for us all.
"We are also pleased for Ivy Bank."
