THE Camerata have been touring to Colne, Crewe and the Royal Northern College of Music for many years now, but lately the musical choice has become rather 'safe', and wonderful though it always is, in this month's tour, Colne lost out in the 'daring' stakes.
Crewe and the RNCM audiences will be treated to Stravinsky's 'Concerto in D' and 'Pulcinella', Colne got Mozart's 'Symphony No 39 in E Flat'. Why was not explained. However the '39th' was majestic and stirring, with the baton of conductor, Douglas Boyd, weaving a tapestry of mellifluous sound through the auditorium.
Mozart's 'Sinfonia Concertante in E flat for oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn and orchestra' was a triumph. The melodies and exquisite harmonies, combined with the overheated room, had a soporific effect on a lot of the audience. It was like being rocked in a warm bath, very relaxing and a perfect way to de-stress yourself.
Haydn's Symphony No 60, subtitled by the composer 'IL Distratto', was written for a farce about an absentminded man who forgets to go to his own wedding. It had humorous moments, but needed Douglas Boyd's introduction.
A hugely enjoyable evening, but such a pity Stravinsky was not on the programme.
