I WOULD like to express my thanks to the many kind people who responded to my letter (printed in the Daily Mail) concerning that late fine Radcliffe athlete, Miss Nellie Halstead.
I had no idea when I wrote it that it would strike a chord with so many of her admirers, who so clearly wish that she be remembered. Iain Harris, of the Radcliffe Sports Advisory Council, wrote to assure me that preparations are in hand for the erection of a commemorative plaque in Nellie's honour.
I am very grateful to your readers and to friends of Nellie in Radcliffe and Bury for their wonderful reminiscences and their consideration in contacting me.
I believe that there is a growing interest in amateur sport, as a reaction to the materialism of professional events. We should therefore give credit to, and provide help for, all those altruistic people and clubs who support our young amateur athletes.
MRS A. WALSH LOW,
Gosport, Hants.
