Thwaites' Shire Horses swept the board at the prestigious annual Shire Horse Spring Show in Peterborough, winning five accolades.

A seven-strong team, led by Thwaites' head horsekeeper Charles Beardmore, scooped first prize in the pairs, unicorns and four-horse team categories. And they also came out tops for best brewery turnout and overall turnout.

"We have always considered our horses to be second to none and now we have the proof," said Charles. "You can't do better than be the best and we are absolutely delighted."

Assisted by grooms Richard Green and Andrew Whetton, Charles has worked with the horses for 32 years.

"We have had some wonderful moments, but this is our crowing glory." According to Charles, the key to success is to treat horses like royalty.

Former Thwaites' managing director David Kay, who was there to see the victory, was the man responsible for reinstating the brewery's horses back in 1960.

"I'm very proud," said Mr Kay. "In all the years the horses have been at Thwaites, this is their greatest moment."
