ANTI-WAR protesters were planning to stage a silent demonstration this afternoon outside a surgery being held by Blackburn MP and Foreign Secretary Jack Straw.

The event comes a week after the Blackburn with Darwen Stop The War Coalition had to hastily rearrange a public meeting after council chiefs decided at the last minute they could not use a community centre for their discussion.

Members of the organisation will protest at Audley Community Centre today when Mr Straw meets people from his constituency who are seeking his help.

The coalition is opposed to any military aggression and is calling on the government to halt the hostilities in Afghanistan.

George Davies, of Darwen, who is the vice-chairman of the group, said there was strong support for the coalition's cause.

"We held a public meeting last week which was well attended," said Mr Davies.

"We do not feel the Blair government or our constituency MPs have the mandate to be part of this military aggression in our name.

"We call on them all to reject and support political solutions rather than military ones."

The silent protest in Blackburn was due to start today at 4.45pm.
