Leigh RMI 2 Dag'ham/Redbridge 0 by David Magilton
LEIGH finally produced their spectacular away form at Hilton Park against one of the title contenders.
The Railwaymen have won eight games on the road but previously only managed five on their much maligned pitch. They put that right in style beating the Londoners whose previously impeccable away record was broken for the second time in a week.
The Railwaymen were without strikers Tony Black and Dino Maamria but Marcus Hallows and Andy Heald were more than able deputies.
Indeed they were both instrumental in securing the three points that virtually secures Conference survival for a third season. RMI survived a first 20 minutes dominated by the Daggers, whose best effort in the 17th minute saw Paul Terry's close range effort deflected off the keeper onto the crossbar and safety.
After that RMI gradually took control of the game. Their quick counter-attacks troubled the Londoners and after several near misses they finally broke the deadlock in the 74th minute when Dave German's chip forward caught out the defence and Heald back-headed into the path of Michael Twiss and the young striker hammered his shot home from close range.
Leigh sealed the win in the 81st minute when Ged Kielty clipped the ball forward and although defender German was bundled off the ball, hard-working Marcus Hlalows raced in to fire home from close range.
"If they had scored early on it might have been different but we are a confidence team and after we rode our luck we got better," said RMI boss Steve Waywell. "It was nice to see us carry our away form into a game at home. Our front two caused them problems and Andy Heald's use of the ball was terrific."
