STAFF and pupils from the science department at Mansfield High School have organised a series of trips to celebrate National Science fortnight,

Pupils in years eight and nine at the Brierfield school travelled to Salford University to attend seminars and demonstrations organised by university staff.

Year seven have been asked to solve a murder mystery problem using forensic science techniques, such as chromatography and flame tests.

Head of Science, Mr Peter Ellwood, said: "It is important for students to experience the role that science plays in the outside world.

"Many local industries and businesses give the demonstrations they see and take part in.

"We feel that these can help motivate and encourage students to improve and further the achievements that they have been making in their Science tests and examinations, which in turn can only improve their results in the national Key Stage three tests."
