BLACKBURN Rovers' Under 17s moved a step closer the Academy play-off quarter finals thanks to a 2-0 win over Wolves at the weekend.

England Under 18 star Jerome Watt put Rob Kelly's men in the driving seat after converting a first half penalty. And centre-back Alex Bruce then made the points safe when he headed home a second half free-kick.

That result took Rovers to the top of their qualifying group with maximum points from their opening two games.

And they will now qualify for the knockout stages and a place in the last eight if they can avoid defeat against Derby on Saturday.

"It was a great result from what was a frenetic game but we won quite comfortably in the end," said Kelly. "Wolves had a good result in their first game so they came to our place with the bit between their teeth and they were a big, strong side.

"But we more than matched them physically and our extra quality came through in the end. So it's in our own hands now but getting something against Derby certainly won't be easy because they know if they beat us they've still got a chance of going through themselves."

As things stand, Rovers currently top the group with six points, three ahead of Wolves and Derby in joint second.

But Millwall -- who Rovers defeated 3-1 last weekend -- have no chance of qualifying for the knockout stages after losing both of their games so far.

Meanwhile, Rovers' Under 19s are again without a game this weekend. Ian Miller's men have still to play four games in the Academy Under 19s league before completing their fixtures.
