THE Government must hold urgent talks with football chiefs and TV companies to keep clubs like Bury FC alive.
That's the call from MP David Chaytor, who says clubs face a "growing crisis" over wage costs and what they receive in TV rights.
Mr Chaytor worries that there will be a grim future for lower division clubs, with many players being made redundant at the end of the season.
He has put down a Parliamentary motion calling on the secretary of state for culture, media and sport "to initiate urgent discussions with the Football League, ITV Digital, the Professional Footballers' Association and other interested parties to discuss ways of establishing a stable financial framework for professional football outside the Premier League".
Mr Chaytor notes that wages account for 95 per cent of turnover for First Division clubs, and 85 per cent for Second Division teams. Each First Division club's share of the Football League's television rights is £2 million per season, compared to just £200,000 for each Second Division club.
The Bury North MP has also welcomed the decision to establish a Bury FC Supporters' Trust to help rebuild the club, with the "invaluable help" of Supporters Direct.
