REGARDING your report (LET, March 20) about eight-year-old Rebekah Newton being unable to go to the Apollo Cinema in Blackburn as she needs a wheelchair to get around following a car accident, my heart went out to her and her family.
Last September, my daughter had major surgery on her leg and because she still has no knee joint, she needs a full-length splint to support her leg. She also wanted to go to the cinema but was also unable to do so because it has neither a lift, nor a chair lift.
I wrote to the head office and asked why, but though the reply stated that the cinema had air conditioning, etc. it ignored the points I raised, including my questions as to what plans had been made in order to comply with the Disability Access Act when it finally is fully implemented.
My daughter faces further surgery and, hopefully, after that she will be mobile again. But many people face a lifetime of mobility problems. The cinema needs a lift -- so do people.
