Morecambe Labour Party had a lengthy debate on the issue of the proposed closures of County Council administered Care Homes.

Grave concerns were voiced about the possible effects of any closures for the clients.

The trauma involved could be catastrophic for the people in these homes which are under threat.

We feel that certain areas of the buildings may need to be improved for the future to meet the Government guidelines but in the immediate

instance "continuity and consistency" would best serve the elderly and frail clients who have reached the stage in their lives where familiarity in their everyday lives is very important.

The question also has to be asked whether the private sector could cope with the extra number of clients, as presumably they will also have to comply to the same standards set by the Government.

Members were also very concerned about the possibility of "bed blocking" in hospitals if this proposal is implemented.

This is a very sensitive issue which needs to be handled with great sympathy and understanding for both the clients and the public.

Morecambe Labour party unanimously decided to lobby the County Council not to carry out any closures.

The branch will also be writing to the Member of Parliament for her support.
