REPUBLIC of Ireland midfielder Alan Mahon last night feared his season could be over after his latest comeback was cut-short by another injury blow.

The former Tranmere star, who has not appeared in the first team since January 26, limped out of last night's reserve game with Bolton with a thigh injury after just 35 minutes.

And now the 23-year-old fears that could rule him out of the majority of Rovers' relegation battle as he awaits to find out the full extent of the damage following a scan this morning.

"It's got all the makings of a thigh strain but I'll know more once I've had a scan today," said Mahon.

"Only then will I know just how bad it is and how long I'm likely to be out for.

"So it's disappointing because I haven't played in two months and at this moment in time I'm feeling angry and annoyed.

"I've only just got back from my last problem in the last couple of days so it's very, very frustrating.

"But there's nothing at all I can do about it other than wait to hear what the medical staff say."

Mahon had hoped to stake a claim for a recall after battling back from an Achilles injury which forced him out of the trip to Dubai last week.

However, his latest set-back looks certain to rule him out of the Bank Holiday double-header against Leicester and Southampton at the very least.

And that would come as a damaging blow to manager Graeme Souness who is short of cover for Damien Duff on the left-hand side of midfield as Rovers prepare for the run-in.

Meanwhile, wantaway striker Egil Ostenstad still hasn't given up on the possibility of a club making a last-ditch attempt to sign him ahead of today's transfer deadline.

The Norwegian international is desperate to get away from Ewood to relaunch his career elsewhere and he has revealed that his agent is in talks with an unnamed club about a possible deal.

"I know my agent is working on something which might happen but we'll just have to wait and see," said Ostenstad.

"I don't think that depends on what happens today but I don't want to say too much more at this stage because it's still early days as yet."

Ostenstad has endured something of a nightmare season, making only a handful of first team appearances after slipping down the pecking order.

But he will only leave if the move is right for him and he's hoping for a permanent deal rather than a move somewhere on loan.

"As I've said all along, I want a permanent solution because I've no intention of moving around from club to club," said Ostenstad.

"So I'll only move on if it's right for me. I'm not going to go just anywhere for the sake of it.

"I think everyone knows my situation at Blackburn and it's time for a fresh start."
