PLAY zone plans have been thrown out following an outcry.

Many Hindsford residents feared a proposed play area on land next to Fallowfield Way would be a night-time magnet for trouble makers.

Cradle swings and climbing frames for youngsters would have been funded by developers, but one local, plagued by louts congregating on a field behind her home, said: "The likelihood is that two to five years old would use it afternoons and after 7 pm it would become a place for teenagers to hang out and get high on drink and drugs."

"I know what it is like for young children having no where to go I have two young children of my own, so I do understand that the council is trying to provide a park for them. I am sure it could go further down the field or in another area like the other end of the railway line -- across Tyldesley Road."

Three quarters of the Clarence Street residents signed a petition against the proposed siting of the play area.

Another resident from Fallowfield Way complained the proposal "adds nothing" to Hindsford play facilities:

"The land is already -- quite properly -- used by children for playing. What is most needed in built-up areas is open space. To place this equipment in the middle of the only flat area will restrict the age range of those who can legitimately use it, and the sort of games that can be played."

Mr Bowyer suggested the land be turned into a "village green".

Cllr Mark Aldred suggested the play equipment could be better located at the side of Sacred Heart School.
