VETERAN serviceman John Kelly is calling for round-the-clock wardens following a cowardly spate of robberies on lone pensioners.

The Leigh Royal British Legion stalwart is to meet Leigh MP Andy Burnham to discuss the growing dangers facing elderly residents in sheltered accommodation.

It follows a string of attacks in Leigh and Mosley Common and a Journal-backed police appeal to the public to shop the offenders.

John, 65, who lives in sheltered accommodation in English Churches Houses-owned Selby Court, Leigh, said: "Security for the elderly in these homes is getting worse.

Emergency

"Owners seem to be trying to replace wardens with automatic emergency alarm systems, but residents could be dead by the time help gets to you.

"I've been told of one woman being attacked while trying to reach a pull cord. If there were wardens on duty at night these things could be prevented from happening.

"We have cameras now but we still have to cope with yobs around the premises."

A spokesperson for the English Churches' Houses Group said: "We are aware of the need to ensure our residents' safety and have regular meetings with them to discuss any concerns.

"We have a scheme manager whose top priority is to ensure the safety of our residents -- and CCTV.

"But it is important for residents to close windows at night and not let strangers in.

"We are also currently liaising with residents."

Leigh MP Andy Burnham said: "These attacks on old people are appalling. It is a situation which causes great concern and clearly needs to be addressed.

"We have contacted the police and Wigan Council to see what action can be taken to identify the people responsible and to see if further security measures can be introduced at homes. It is a matter of high priority."
