BOMB disposal experts carried out a controlled explosion of an 18lb unexploded artillery shell which had been found by contractors on site at Heysham 1 nuclear power plant.
Workmen unearthed the 1920s shell at 10.00am on Wednesday morning, and Royal Logistics Corps bomb disposal team were called from their base in Chester.
Staff sergeant Stephen Fallon and Corp Andy Cook examined the shell and found that it did not have a fuse and was safe to move from the site to the beach, south of the station, where it was safely dealt with at 3pm.
