PLANS for a Hindley train station car park finally seem to be steaming ahead.
Councillors Stuart Shaw and Jack Topping, who -- together with MP Andy Burnham -- have been pushing for progress, met at the site to discuss the results of a feasibility study carried out last year.
The proposal on the table is for a car park that will accommodate up to 48 cars, at an estimated cost of £150,000.
Part of the money may come from a central government pot.
Subject to a satisfactory groundwork investigation and planning approval, the development may start in September.
Cllr Shaw said: "This is great news for the people of Hindley and should provide a first step in the revitalisation of Hindley Station. The development will benefit the whole community and should help to reduce the off-street parking which has been such a big problem in recent years."
Mr Burnham said: "At last we have some progress on this much-needed development in Hindley. Parking problems have limited the use of the station in the past, and this increased capacity should result in a significant increase in rail travel."
