A RADCLIFFE father is still unconscious in hospital five days after being attacked by a gang of thugs.

Jeff Cooke is on a ventilator in Fairfield General Hospital's intensive care unit.

His wife and parents are keeping a round-the-clock vigil at his bedside.

Mr Cooke and a male friend were savagely beaten in Water Street outside the Royal Oak pub by a group of between four and six men.

The 26-year-old married man received the worst of the beating. One of the attackers stamped on his head as he lay unconscious in the street.

Mr Cooke and his friend had been drinking in the Royal Oak and were making their way home when they were attacked shortly after 11pm on Saturday (March 22).

He was taken to hospital where he is continuing to receive treatment for serious head injuries. The other attack victim declined hospital treatment.

Detectives are keen to speak to a number of motorists who were forced to swerve to avoid the attack as it took place in the middle of Water Street.

Detective Constable Chris Jameson of Whitefield CID is spearheading the hunt for the attackers.

He said: "Both Mr Cooke and his friend had just left the Royal Oak pub when they became involved in an incident with a group of men. These men then systematically and severely assaulted the two friends.

"The attack took place around closing time and there must have been a number of people walking along Water Street who witnessed the incident. Also, several cars had to swerve around the group of men while they carried out the assault. We would like to speak to any motorists who saw the fighting to come forward."

Anyone who can help police with their investigation should contact DC Jameson on 856 8212 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
