LAST week was cup final week for Bury and Table Tennis League, with one final being played on each night at different venues. There were some hard-fought contests, although no nail-biting finishes.
McDONALD CUP at ELPM: Ramsbottom A 6, Little Lever 3.
LEAGUE CUP I at Bolton Road: Carlton Club C 6, Prestwich TTC B 3;
DWYER CUP at St Philip's: Ramsbottom A 6, Little Lever 3.
LEAGUE CUP II at Unsworth: Carlton Club D 6, Claybank A 3.
POYTRESS CUP at Prestwich: St Philip's A 9, Ramsbottom D 0.
MCDONALD CUP
This cup final was played on Monday night and was closely fought between the two top teams in the league.
Five of the nine sets went to three games, several ending in 21-19 score-lines. Michael Moir and Mark Ramsbottom of Ramsbottom proved unbeatable and Ramsbottom A retained the cup from last season.
LEAGUE CUP I
Carlton Club C, who are top of Division Three, were paired with Prestwich B from Division Two with the advantage of a five-point handicap.
After four sets, three of them going to three games, the score stood at 2-2 but Carlton Club won four of the next five sets to win comfortably, 6-3.
Les Craig and Alan Menzies were the unbeaten players for Carlton Club.
DWYER CUP
The Dwyer Cup is the main cup competition in the league and the final was a repeat of Monday night's final, this time being played at St Philip's.
The same six players -- Michael Moir, Dave Newton and Mark Ramsbottom for Ramsbottom A, and Howard Leigh, Ron Durose and Phil Riley for Little Lever, were involved, albeit in a different playing order.
All the sets were hard-fought with some really close score-lines, but the Little Lever players found Moir and Ramsbottom still unbeatable. Ramsbottom went on to win their second trophy of the week by 6-3.
LEAGUE CUP II
This final is for teams from Divisions Four and Five and was played between the two top teams from Division Four -- Carlton Club D and Claybank A.
Again the result was 6-3 after some well contested sets. Jack Bostock scored a treble for Carlton, Keith Cheyne added two wins, and Clive Roberts, one. This win for the D team, completed a successful double for Carlton Club who had already won League Cup I earlier in the week.
POYTRESS CUP
This is the handicapped cup competition for all teams eliminated from the Dwyer Cup in the first round.
The final was played between St Philip's A -- with Peter Bladon, Denis Collier and Sean Toland -- and Ramsbottom D -- with Ray Kay, Joe Gizon and Martin Holt. These two teams currently lead Division Two. St Philip's A have had an excellent season with all three players contributing to their success. On the night, Ramsbottom D had no answer to their all-round abilities and St Philip's won the competition 9-0.
