Walmersley
THE A section fixtures threw up the top two once again in the Arthur Booth B Section.
Walmersley D were hosts to Fishpool A and got off to the best possible start.
The Jones boys took the first two frames 61-45 for Colin and 121-55 for Darren, which included a 26 break.
The Mather Road lads seemed to be going three up when Alex Dearden made a 28 break, but Dave Morley had other ideas and pulled back to win on the black.
Fishpool took the fourth and fifth when Walley Kane beat Sammy Allen 80-18 to go in front on the aggregate. The home team recovered in the final match when the veteran of the green baize, John Holt, took the frame and the match by winning 74-49.
Still hard on their heels are Tottington D who had to travel to The Salisbury where there was a rare occurrence of the television being louder than Jimmy Morrison! Sid Bailey and myself soon had the Tottington motor purring with scores of 81-47 and 105-63 in the first two frames.
Jason Horrocks pulled one back in the next frame with pots on the blue, pink and black which Jimmy White would have been proud of.
It was to be their only success as the trio of Heaton, Daulby and Bury wrapped up an 8-1 victory for the visitors.
Summerseat had a bad day at the office after having made a useful move in recent weeks. John Jowett and Steve Gough were their only winners at Salisbury A, where Steve Slymons's 79-11 victory in frame two, and Dave Kean's 61-33 win in frame five, secured the aggregate.
There was an unusual occurrence at Bury Bridge where the visitors were Tottington B. Brian Lister's 44-24 was the closest result for the home side and Bruce Holden's 89-25 was the largest for the away team.
The matches went alternately, which meant that every player who broke off lost his frame. Tottington's C team managed four winners but still lost the aggregate.
Paul Dawson and Danny King did the damage for Elton Lib B when they took the second and third frames 50-41 and 76-22 respectively.
The 'evergreen' Ray Critchley notched up a 36 break in Frame four but still finished on the losing end of a 69-61 score-line. Lib D also took five points at home to the under-achieving Bury Bridge B.
Ricky Vadasz made a 32 break in his first frame win 80-67, but this was more than reversed when Gareth McNamara took the second 83-27 against Dave Harris. How captain Reynolds wished Dave could bring his individual form into the team matches!
Walshaw A have made a valiant effort over the last few matches to avoid the drop. They took six points once again on Wednesday at home to Salisbury C, fighting back from a 2-1 deficit to take the last three frames.
John Lonsdale's 74-23 win in the last was the best, while R. Mathers' 76-38, including a 30 break, took the honours for Salisbury.
In the only card available from the C Section, Stanley B jumped to the top of the table with a 7-2 victory at Central A. Lomas, Bennet and Wilding took the first three for the visitors before the snooker club's lads made a come-back. Good to see Les Chambers still performing.
The last word was left to Stanley as Dave Holt secured his own and the aggregate with a comfortable win in the last.
In the top match from the A Section, Heywood travelled to ELPM, not their favourite venue and without the services of the mercurial steward.
The first four frames were shared, although the visitors had the aggregate advantage after Tony Preston's 93-39. John Groves and Tony Hart won two close games to take the final frames to obtain a 7-2 win for the champions.
Elton Lib C are settling in well in the top-flight, taking the match 8-0, the first time they have achieved this and against an 'in-form' Walmersley A.
It was a match of heavy scoring for the new George Street boys, Paul Holt 80, Phil Brearley 82, and captain Russ Howarth 77, helping the home side to a total of 440 points. Tottington A and Radcliffe St Mary's provided the closest game of the night.
Jim Coleman got the ball rolling for the visitors, with the narrowest of margins, in the first frame, only for Tottington to come back with the next three.
Andy Rhodes 79-38 in frame two included a break of 55 and the fourth frame won by only one point. Barry Woolner and Paul Dudley won the last two for the visitors but failed to save the bonus points by just one chalk.
BREAKS: A. Rhodes (Tottington D) 55; R. Critchley (Elton Lib A) 36; R. Vadasz (Bury Bridge B) 32; R. Mather (Walshaw A) 30; P. Taylor (Tottington D) 29; A. Dearden (Walmersley D) 28; D. Jones (Walmersley D) 26.
CENTURIES: D. Jones (Walmersley D) 121; P. Taylor (Tottington D) 105.
