AT last we enjoyed a dry day for a clubrun!
The B Section headed for Cragg Vale but little did we know what Brian had in store for us.
After Rochdale we turned off for Calderbrook and the minor road above Summit tunnel which is closed to motor vehicles as it is slowly subsiding into the valley below.
After Walsden we again turned off the main road and climbed to California (these clubruns are getting a little ambitious!), Lumbutts and Mankinholes.
We now left the the tarmac behind and rode up a reasonably surfaced track which brought us to London Road.
The locals must have a well developed sense of humour as from this point onwards we were reduced to walking and I cannot imagine anyone ever using this as a route to the Capital.
The surface slowly deteriorated until we came to a lane so rough it was even spurned by the mountain bikers and yet we continued, at one point lifting our bikes into the field as it was easier going.
From Erringden Moor we had a good view of Stoodley Pike and it's monument erected in 1814 to commemorate the Peace of Ghent and Napoleon's abdication it has twice collapsed and been restored.
We continued along the labyrinth of lanes and descended into Mytholmroyd down a lane so steep and muddy that we worked up a sweat preventing the bikes from running with us down the slope! The two intelligent members who went to the lunch stop on the main road arrived 1 hours before us and we then decided to continue up Cragg Vale to the top of Blackstone Edge where a swift descent to Littleborough then saw us retrace our outward route through Rochdale and home.
