THE demanding climb over Oxenhope moor, was last Sunday's route taken for the ride to Gargrave in the Yorkshire Dales. The day was overcast for the most part, but it is spring and this seemed to have stimulated many others to get out on their bikes.
The ride home was through Burnley and on this occasion, the demands of the morning ride were felt on the climb out of this North Lancashire Town. On Monday evening at the Velodrome, Adrian Smith won the Devil and the 20 laps point.
At one time his wins depended on trackcraft, but his current form is such that he is the one dictating the pace and having energy to make the critical scores.
Bob Duckworth adapted the same approach in the Course des primes and shot off from the start to take the first three laps. He then swung up the banking for a breather, but unfortunately dropped on the wheel of a retiring rider. This meant he lost contact with the field and was in no position to score again.
However, his three primes was good enough for third place overall. Phil Collins is not enjoying his best form, taking just one lap. The social side of the club is very active at the moment.
The next event is our annual reunion on April 6 at Walshaw Sports club. It promises to be a good evening with singer Perry Westlake entertaining and well over 50 tickets sold so far. For further information ring Bob or Christine Duckworth on 01204-884297.
TANDEM RIDING
CLUB FOR THE
VISUALLY
HANDICAPPED
SIX tandem pairs turned out for last Sunday's ride to Lymm. Up to now Sharon Cox has been steering one of our tandems, with rear gear controls operated by the visually impaired rider.
On this occasion she was learning to ride a machine with normal front gear controls, meaning she had to do the tricky, when on a tandem, steering and changing gear at the same time.
She did this effectively under the watchful eye of Dave Harrison who is normally a front rider. With no front riders available, there will not be a run this Sunday.
