LEIGH Centurions have banned booze on the terraces at least for the rest of this season.
The club moved swiftly in response to the bottle-throwing incident at the recent Challenge Cup tie against Wigan at Hilton Park.
The move comes at a request from the fans, says Centurions chairman Mike Nolan.
"I met some of the fans last week and they all said the same thing, they don't want drink allowed on the terraces or in the stands. They don't want the name of the club sullied by a small minority," he said.
"I'm proud of the fact that 99.9 per cent of our fans are law-abiding; it's the others we're determined to root out."
From now until the end of the season fans will only be able to buy and consume alcohol in the various bars on the ground.
Leigh are still awaiting results of a Rugby League inquiry into the trouble at the Wigan game.
Extra security
Mr Nolan says: "We had extra CCTV surveillance, segregated the crowd, had 14 police officers on duty, had 90 stewards and 30 extra security men. What more could we do?
"We have already been given one name and we know he is a Leigh supporter home and away. We will get him and if there is evidence to prosecute, we will pass it on to the police."
RL spokesman John Huxley said: "Leigh spent £9000 on extra security and did everything possible to make sure the match passed without incident. We are quite satisfied there was no serious public disorder."
But he did question the reporting of the incident in the national press.
"The sad part is that some people got their news values mixed up. If there had been a riot I could have understood it. What concerns me more than three bottles thrown on the pitch is that the story should appear on the front page of the Sydney Morning Herald!"
