MY car is fully taxed and insured and has a current MoT. I have it serviced twice yearly to make sure it is roadworthy.
I have held a full driving licence for 44 years which was unblemished until recently. About 18 months ago, I was driving through a small village late one Saturday afternoon when I was caught on a speed camera exceeding the speed limit.
The two policemen who came to my home at 11.20pm to inform me of my misdemeanour said I was driving at a speed of 36mph in a 30mph zone. I was also informed that a 10 per cent excess is allowed, so that meant that I was actually over the speed limit by 3mph. I was duly fined £40 and had three penalty points put on my licence.
I am not saying that I should not have been penalised for this action because I believe rules and laws are made to be adhered to, but I read (LET, March 16) about a man who had no licence, no insurance, no Mot and the car had a bald tyre and was therefore unroadworthy. He was fined £50 and disqualified from driving for six months.
As he has no licence anyway, I do not think the disqualification is going to bother him unduly and the fine is not as much as the current fine for speeding.
My father used to say: 'The law is an ass.' I now think I believe him.
