THE new Hyndburn and Ribble Valley Primary Care Trust will come into existence on Monday, after a three-month public consultation between May and July last year.

The Primary Care Trust -- which employs almost 1,000 staff across Hyndburn and the Ribble Valley -- takes over many of the responsibilities previously undertaken by Communicare NHS Trust which closed early in March and East Lancashire Health Authority.

It will also continue to carry out and develop the services previously offered by these organisations. The primary Care trust will be governed by a board with a majority of local lay members. In particular this will:

provide a full range of community health services for the people of Hyndburn and Ribble Valley

promote the provision of a full range of primary care, including GPs, dentists, pharmacists and opticians

use government resources to purchase hospital services for local people

work in partnership with other agencies to improve the health and social well being of Hyndburn and Ribble Valley residents.

Chairman Martin Hill, said: "The creation of a local primary care trust provides a real opportunity to work closely with local people and NHS staff in order that they can influence and shape local service provision."
