THE headteacher of Bury Grammar School (Girls) is to leave.
Miss Caroline Thompson will take up the post of headteacher at King Edward's School in Bath later this year.
She has held the position at Bury Grammar since 1998 and her original intention was to remain for longer.
However, her elderly mother who lives near Bath is increasingly frail and this played a significant role in Miss Thompson's decision to accept the appointment.
She said: "I have felt privileged to lead such a fine school since 1998, and I have every confidence that it will continue to flourish under whoever is appointed as my successor."
She added: "Delightful pupils, immensely supportive parents, committed teaching and non-teaching staff and a loyal governing body ensure that this is a school of which the town can feel justifiably proud.
"I wish the school every success in the future in continuing the tradition and I will follow its fortunes with considerable interest and look back on my time here with some affection."
