CLEVELEYS is giving the green light to the UK's largest locally-based road safety project.

As part of the latest drive to cut road casualties, the newest laser speed detection equipment and high-visibility Traffic cameras will be operating at Amounderness Way, Fleetwood Road and Rossall Road.

Traffic cameras with yellow panels are now on the A587 Rossall Road, near Rossall Gardens Cleveleys.

Officers in the northern division will also be driving a laser-fitted Ford Galaxy mobile speed enforcement vehicle.

Communications manager at the Lancashire Partnership for Road Safety, Linda Sanderson, said: "Public research has shown that many people in Lancashire support the use of traffic cameras as a means of reducing crashes.

"We hope the yellow panels will increase their visibility and further encourage motorists to reduce their speed and help make the county's roads safer for everyone."

Strict Government guidelines dictate that traffic cameras can be placed only where there is a history of crashes and a high level of 'speeding' motorists.

Sergeant John McLaughlin of the Road Policing Unit said: "Excess speed can be a killer. This new vehicle, with its state of the art equipment, will greatly increase the chances of catching those who choose to exceed the speed limit.

"This Partnership is not about making money from motorists - the aim is to save lives and reduce the numbers of people injured on Lancashire's roads,"added Sergt McLaughlin.

"We would rather not catch anybody speeding at all."
