IAN SINGLETON's 'Pub Grub' description (LET, March 9) of the Hapton Inn bore little resemblance to the place we know.

One wonders, perhaps, if the "bottle or two of wine" that he had enjoyed the night before had somewhat blinkered his view of this establishment -- a very popular pub with a relaxing atmosphere and a wide variety of liquid refreshment, and an extremely varied menu.

A closer look at the menu would have revealed many more vegetarian dishes -- around 10 is closer to the mark.

From his remarks, I take it that Mr Singleton declined the tasty vegetables, including grilled tomatoes, peas, carrots and side salad which are served as standard with the sirloin steak, mushrooms, onions and chips which he ordered (not forgetting the choice of potatoes -- chipped, roasted, new or mashed).

He may have enjoyed his visit more if he had looked more closely at the menu, or for assistance from the staff, whom we have always found helpful and friendly.

I notice that, for all his sarcasm, Mr Singleton had to award a five-star rating to The Paten Inn for the food. And, after all, this is what the column is about -- pub grub.
