PENDLE people are invited to attend a service and vigil in memory of Queen Elizabeth, The Queen Mother.

The service at St Philips Church, in Leeds Road, Nelson, will be on Monday, April 8 -- the day before her funeral at Westminster Abbey. It will start at 5.30pm with a silent vigil followed by a service at 6pm, which will be attended by the Mayor of Pendle, Councillor Colin Waite.

Books of condolences will be available at Colne Town Hall, Nelson Town Hall and Barnoldswick Town Hall reception areas throughout the next week and a book will also be available for people to sign at the service. After the Queen Mother's funeral on Tuesday, the books will be closed and will then be sent to Buckingham Palace.

Coun Waite said: "This is an opportunity for local people to pay their respects to a remarkable woman." The Union Jack flag will fly at half-mast at Nelson Town Hall and other council buildings until Tuesday night as a mark of respect.
