A WOMAN was punched by a robber as she resisted attempts to snatch her bag.

The force of the blow made the victim, 49, drop the bag and give up her struggle in Tythebarn Street, Darwen at around 12.30am on Easter Monday.

Det Sgt Ian Critchley, of Darwen CID, said this type of violent street robbery was rare in the town and appealed for anyone with information to come forward.

The woman was walking along the street with a female friend when she was approached from behind by a man whose face was covered by a hooded top.

He attempted to snatch the handbag and flee, but she gripped onto the straps and caused the robber to panic.

He then punched the woman in the shoulder, knocking her to the ground. The robber then ran away down the street with the black handbag, which contained £40 in cash and a few personal belongings of nominal value.

The woman was bruised and shaken, but was not taken to hospital after the incident which lasted less than half a minute.

The other woman looked on helpless throughout the incident, and tended to her friend as the robber fled.

Detectives interviewed one witness yesterday but are no nearer getting a lead on the robber.

DS Critchley, of Darwen CID, said: "This type of attack is rare in Darwen. The woman was shaken by the incident but uninjured.

"She put up a struggle and only released her grip when she was punched. The man did not say anything at all during the incident.

"We only have a limited description of him wearing dark clothing but, in view of the violent nature of the attack, I am keen to hear from witnesses or anyone who may have information about the attack."

The women described the man as wearing a dark fleece, hooded top and dark trousers.
