NATASHA Kelly signed up for the Commonwealth Games after hearing about a volunteer scheme from a friendly taxi driver who, knowing she was anxious to find work, suggested she apply.
The 19-year-old of Lytham Road, Blackburn, enlisted on a 30-hour training course in preparation for this summer's games in Manchester.
And Natasha became one of 100 volunteers specially selected to witness the official hand-over between stadium contractors and the City of Manchester.
Natasha said: "I decided to volunteer because it's the chance to do something different. The day was great fun and we got to meet loads of different people."
Prime Minister Tony Blair and the chairman and deputy chairman of Manchester City Council attended the ceremony.
Norman Mccoll, pre-volunteer advisor, said: "Around 15 students from Blackburn college have volunteered for the Games so it should be great fun for everyone. The hand-over day was terrific. It raised everyone's expectations and we are all buzzing for the games to start."
Volunteers have yet to be given specific job descriptions and assignments for the summer games, which start on July 25 and run until August 4.
