HAPPY memories of a childhood spent in Blackpool during the war have led one couple to retire and celebrate their golden wedding anniversary back on the Fylde.

Phyllis and Denis Shiels moved from their home in Fallowfield, Manchester, to Kings Road in Ansdell almost two years ago now and haven't regretted a minute.

It was 75-year-old Phyllis who made the decision to up and leave as memories of sun-filled days and swimming in the open air Lido pool finally drew her back to the area she and her sister were evacuated to during the war -- some 62 years later.

Phyllis said: "I have always carried extremely fond memories of Blackpool with me throughout my life. My twin sister and I were evacuated to Swanage Avenue, just off Harrowside in the South Shore area of Blackpool.

"We were put up with a lovely elderly couple who spoilt us both rotten and threw a wonderful 13th birthday party for us. Some of my fondest memories are of swimming in the open air pool on the front and visiting the Pleasure Beach.

"Both my husband and I are enjoying being back here and we have been taking lots of lovely walks together."

Phyllis met her husband in 1948 through her sisters' partner and were married in 1952 in Manchester. Soon after Denis re-joined the Marines and they went on to travel extensively abroad.

On April 20 the couple are to celebrate 50 years of marriage with a huge party at the Lindum Hotel in St Annes. Denis said: "We are looking forward to seeing all our old friends and relations and even new additions to the family. Our daughter and son-in-law will also be coming with our three grandchildren who all live in Reading. We are expecting around 80 people at the do."

When asked about the secret to a happy marriage he laughed and said: "Learning to do as you are told! It makes for a much smoother life."
