BLACKBURN boss Graeme Souness looks set to unleash both Damien Duff and Keith Gillespie on Chelsea tonight as he goes in search of the victory required to all but guarantee Rovers' Premiership survival.

But the days of seeing two out-and-out wingers operating in tandem at Ewood may become increasingly rare next term after Souness made it clear yesterday that his side may need to adopt a more cautious approach on occasions in order to avoid a repeat of this season's struggles.

"I'm reluctant to play the two widemen anymore because it leaves us vulnerable at times," said Souness.

"That's OK when you are bossing a game and scoring plenty of goals but when you find yourself under the cosh it's not an ideal situation."

There's no doubting Duff and Gillespie have thrilled fans thanks to some exhilarating performances down the flanks for Rovers this season.

But is it really possible to play them regularly in the same side?

If you look down the rest of the Premiership, I can't think of another side which plays with two out-and-out wingers as Rovers have done on numerous occasions this term.

But then when those two wide-men are among your top four or five players, there's also an argument to say they both need to be accommodated at all costs.

It's a dilemma which I'm sure has given Souness many a sleepless night because if anyone wants to win games with flair and pannache then it's him.

But whatever your stance on the argument, it's impossible ignore the fact that Rovers have been hit on the break on far too many occasions this season and there must be a reason for that.

I, personally, still believe you can play both of the Irishmen together, particularly at home, because both are no slouches when it comes to getting back and defending and helping out their full-backs.

It's perhaps away from home where Rovers need to adopt a more cautious approach by employing a narrower midfield which features only one genuine wideman.

If Rovers survive -- and I firmly believe they will -- then the first thing they must do next season is improve on a dreadful away record if they want to avoid a similar struggle this time next year.
