PLANNING chiefs have thrown out plans to build new houses close to a landmark church.
A scheme for six new homes on Church Lane, close to St Luke's Church and cemetery, was refused at a Wigan Council development control committee meeting because of overdevelopment and traffic concerns.
The proposals met with strong opposition from Wigan Council Deputy Leader Cllr Tom Sherratt.
He said at the Wigan town hall meeting: "What we have here is a typical example of cashing in on every available space."
PLand Limited had hoped to build two blocks of three detached properties and parking for a dozen cars.
Local residents complained the proposals would affect their privacy.
Previously plans to build 21 flats on the site had been submitted but were withdrawn by in February.
